Although we have
a regular intern program, we try to tailor individual internships to the
specific goals of the students.
All interns have
the opportunity to work directly with the Institute director, as well as
with other interns and our network of consultants. While the projects
vary, internships are quarter-time (8-10 hours a week on a flexible
schedule). Of that time, approximately one-fourth is assigned to office
routines and three-fourths to research, writing, design, or
administrative problems. Here's a capsule version:
Research:
Assist at all levels in on-going projects and/or in the initiation of
new projects. The research is basically social psychological or
sociological in orientation and applied in perspective. Interns will
have the opportunity to learn about research design, interviewing and
questionaire construction as well as data analysis. We also do archival
research and content analyses and maintain extensive files on
ethnoviolence and discrimination.
Design:
We maintain a website, publish a newsletter and factsheets, and
produce numerous reports and brochures. This is an opportunity for
someone to sharpen their desktop publishing and design skills while
building their portfolio.
Administrative:
For students who want to learn how a small nonprofit organization works,
we can provide the full range of opportunities and experience.
Writing:
For journalism and public relations majors as well as for those
interested in a writing career, you can join us in the production of our
bimonthly newsletter and in a variety of other writing projects. You can
look forward to an intensive experience not only in skills learning but
also in a solid learning of the issues of race and ethnic relations in
the U.S. today.
